Photovoltaic Energy is electrical energy that is made directly from sunlight. The devices that do this conversion are known as solar cells. Most of the solar cells produced today are made of thin slices or layers of silicon. This type is currently from 10% to 17% efficient ie they convert from between 10 and 17% of the incident sunlight and solar heat into electric power. They are often confused with solar water heating panels which are a significant energy source, but for water heating only. New non silicon solar cells are in the research phase, with several approaches to the problem. So called 'organic' solar cells use organic dyes as a phenomenally thin layer and organic conductors to capture the sunlight and convert it to electricity. These type of cells could lend themselves to cheap mass production.
